Success case
Cherry Tomato Plantation with SenseCAP LoRaWAN: Smart Farming at Greenhouse for SDGs in the Netherlands
Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge Project illustrates a case on AI and IoT-enabled cherry tomato production at a greenhouse enabled by Seeed’s SenseCAP LoRaWAN sensors and gateway. Thereby, this Project can contribute to technological innovation of the traditional agriculture sector, help cultivate sustainable food produce by lowering negative environmental impacts, and enhance the UN’s SDGs 2, 1, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 17.

Project background and needs
AiCU took part in the Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands, using SenseCAP to monitor the greenhouse environment during the six-month cherry tomato project and feed data into autonomous control.
Inputs and Outputs
- The challenge required producing higher-quality cherry tomatoes with fewer resources.
- Inputs and outputs were shaped by the greenhouse's environmental settings.
Cultivation decisions needed to be supported by measured data.
Remote Autonomous Control
- Competition goals included remote greenhouse control and net profit optimization.
- Teams had to independently decide settings such as lighting, humidity, nutrients, and irrigation.
Sensor data needed to feed into algorithms and control processes.
Solution and architecture
Environmental Sensing
SenseCAP sensors and gateways collect soil moisture, soil temperature, electrical conductivity, and photosynthetically active radiation.
Modeling and Decision-Making
AiCU combined sensor data, crop modeling, and machine learning to build greenhouse control algorithms during the competition.
