Smart Tea Plantation in Mengding Mountain Enabled by SenseCAP LoRaWAN to Augment Resource Efficiency and Customer Trust for SDGs

SenseCAP LoRaWAN gateway and sensors were deployed in the IoTea Project to monitor crucial environmental data needed to ensure the optimal tea quality in Ya’an of Southwest China. Through this Project, the overall tea plantation management costs have been lowered, economic yields have been increased, and the tea plantation’s brand image has been upgraded to attract customers who care about food traceability and sustainability. By doing so, the IoTea Project achieves the UN’s SDGs 8, 9, 12, 10, 11, 1, 5, 6, 7, 2, 4, 13, 15, 16 and 17.

Project background and needs

The IoTea project piloted on a high-mountain tea plantation on Mengding Mountain in Ya'an, Sichuan, helping the tea farmer address high labor costs, uneven budding, low yield, and low brand recognition.

  • In 2018, Mr. Deng joined the small-scale IoTea pilot on the family tea plantation he had taken over.

Cultivation Efficiency

  • Low planting density led to high management costs.
  • Uneven budding resulted in lower yields.

Tea plantation management needed environmental monitoring support.

Brand Trust

  • The high-mountain organic environment was hard to convey to consumers.
  • Low brand recognition made it difficult to win customer trust.

Consumers needed a way to look up the tea's origin and growing records.

Solution and architecture

Monitoring and Connectivity

SenseCAP collects CO2, barometric pressure, light, temperature/humidity, and soil data, sending it through a gateway to the cloud server for storage and integration.

Platform and Traceability

Data is displayed on a webpage and WeChat mini-program; consumers scan a QR code on the packaging to view real-time and historical environmental charts.
