Success case
Smart Black Soldier Fly Farming in Tanzania: Using SenseCAP Sensors and Outdoor Gateway for Sustainable Livestock Feed Production!
Spearheaded by Tanzania Open Innovation Organization (TOIO), local university students and citizens in Tanga co-created “BSF Farming – Creating Protein Content” project – a resource-efficient and low-cost protein production method by monitoring and optimizing BSFs’ living environment. This has been done by deploying Seeed’s SenseCAP LoRaWAN sensors, SenseCAP Outdoor Gateway, SenseCAP Portal, and SenseCAP Mate App.

Project background and needs
Led by TOIO, a small indoor black soldier fly farm in Tanga, Tanzania deployed SenseCAP sensors and an outdoor gateway, viewing environmental data and receiving threshold-exceedance notifications through the Portal and Mate apps.
- Local university students and citizens in Tanga jointly created the BSF farming and protein production project.
Growth Stage Regulation
- BSF need suitable conditions at different growth and mating stages.
- Temperature, humidity, light, and substrate conditions all need continuous monitoring.
Needed to notify farmers based on environmental thresholds so they could take action.
Deployment and Usability
- The team required sensors without complex wiring and at an affordable cost.
- Configuration and visualization on computers and phones needed to be simple and clear.
Needed wireless monitoring and an easy-to-use notification interface.
Solution and architecture
Environmental Data Collection
S2101, S2102, S2103, S2104, and a barometric pressure sensor work with an outdoor gateway to monitor the farming environment.
Data and Notification
SenseCAP Portal and Mate apps display environmental data and send phone messages when parameters exceed preset ranges.
